Michael Turner profile

Around 100 colour reproductions of original paintings by Michael Turner illustrate this excellent history of the RAF. Forewords by both the artist and Raymond Baxter are followed by the story of RAF aircraft evolution, starting with World War I and continuing through to the modern jet age.

The images are complimented by text from Chaz Bowyer one of the world’s leading aviation historians and are also backed up with numerous pencil sketches. A little more about how the artist goes about creating a painting would be welcome but overall presentation is good and the book represents good value for money.

This book was originally released in 1981 and, through Michael Turner’s paintings, told the story of the RAF up until that point. The book was reprinted twice in this format in the early 1980’s and again in 1995. In 2003 the RAF Benevolent Fund Enterprises (an organisation dedicated to raising funds for the various RAF charities) released a completely revised and updated version. Some sections were removed, but many more were added, with new paintings by the artist that bring the story right up to date. It was also subtlety re-titled as ‘Aircraft of the Royal Air Force in service since 1918’. This revised volume was in landscape rather than portrait format and was made available in softback, hardback and leather bound versions.
