Along with Frank Wootton, Robert Grant Smith, known to most as ‘R G’, is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern aviation art. In a remarkable career spanning seven decades R G Smith achieved acclaim as both an aircraft engineer and designer, and an aviation artist. In his early years he was a leading member of the design team for the Douglas Aircraft Company (later to be McDonnell Douglas). His artwork started as a hobby but as his proficiency and popularity grew it became his main occupation.

R G Smith was a highly prolific artist and so any book of this type can only include a small cross section of his complete body of work which is estimated to include over 1,500 aviation drawings and paintings. Given the artists heavy involvement in the design of the SDB Dauntless, AD Skyraider and A4 Skyhawk (amongst many others) it is not surprising to see these types well represented.

The first quarter of the book is dedicated to R G Smith’s autobiography which is well written and provides a superb insight into the ways of military aircraft design before the advent of the computer (or indeed the calculator for that matter !). It also tells the story of how his engineering and art careers managed to run in parallel, as well as some of his combat experiences whilst on secondment to military units. The remainder of the book is taken up with examples of his work, including in the last chapter, some non-aviation subjects. All together a fine tribute to a leading light of the American aviation industry.

Dramatic lighting and a typically strong composition give these A4F Skyhawks a sense of speed and purpose.
