Background Widely regarded as the leading American aviation artist of the last 20 years, William Phillips was born in 1945 and from an early age showed an interest and talent for sketching and painting. He spent time in the Air Force in the 1960’s and later served as a fire fighter in Oregon. In 1976 he was invited to join the Air Force Art Program and in 1981 took the decision to make aviation art his full time career. Bill has also been involved in the NASA and Navy Art Programs and in 1987-88 was selected by the Navy as their combat artist during the Persian Gulf crisis.
