Most aviation art collectors will know Nicolas Trudgian primarily for the excellent portfolio of limited edition prints he has built up since his first release back in 1990. In the first two books released by Nicolas his pencil work was used to support the main paintings but in this third volume his drawings are the stars.

The Nicolas Trudgian painting style is one of great precision and attention to detail combined with the ability to use light in such a way that brings his aircraft to life. His backgrounds receive equal care and often take as long to paint as the aircraft. All these attributes are here in this superb collection of his drawings; all new images, mostly drawn over the last two years and each executed with meticulous precision.

Forewords are by Squadron Leader Tony Iveson DFC AE CRAeS and Major Alden P Rigby, Silver Star Air Medal (70LC) DUC. An introduction by Nicols Trudgian gives some insight into his background as an artist and the role drawing has played, he also touches on his approach and techniques. The book has been produced in conjunction with Colin Smith, an old friend of Nicolas. Colin contributes a short chapter where he gives his own perspective on working in the partnership. The bulk of the book is dedicated to the drawings, mostly one per page and with the original penciled titles and short descriptions.

Page after page of beautifully executed drawings covering a wide range of subjects, coupled with excellent production quality and presentation make this a must-have volume for aviation art collectors. Very highly recommended.

Limited Edition Versions with Prints

Limited edition versions of the Nicolas Trudgian Aviation Sketchbook were also issued at the time of release in 2008.

The Clash of Eagles Limited Edition was issued with a set of six matching numbered prints (shown below) taken from Nicolas Trudgian drawings. The books were issued with a black slip case with a gold blocked title on the front cover. The books were signed and numbered inside by the artist. The edition size was 300.
The Artist Proof Edition (edition of 50) and Remarque Book and Print Edition (edition of 30) had a seventh print which was signed by Squadron Leader Neville Duke DSO OBE DFC** AFC. There was also a Remarque Book Edition (edition of 30) that did not include any additional prints.
The RAF Leather Bound Edition (edition of 12) included the seven prints, an original drawing signed by 11 JG51 Knights Cross holders and two bookplates with 35 RAF WWII signatures between them.
The USAAF Leather Bound Edition (edition of 12) included the seven prints, an original drawing signed by 10 distinguished P51 pilots and a bookplate signed by 12 Knights Cross holders.
