William Phillips profile

Generally regarded as America’s premiere aviation artist of modern times, William Phillips has been painting aviation subjects for over three decades. Into the Sunlit Splendor is an impressive book by any measure and contains a large cross section of the artist’s work. A wide range of subject types includes many that are usually overlooked by artists such as military trainers, airships and helicopters, all executed in the bold, unmistakable Phillips style. Also included are some of the artist’s landscape works which have been very successful in their own right. Having served time in Vietnam and also having been selected by the US Navy as one of their official artists, Phillips has been able to get inspiration and research material first hand by flying in many of the aircraft types he portrays. There is no doubt that this personal experience brings an extra element of drama and emotion to his paintings.

After a Foreword by Apollo Astronaut Captain Alan Bean and an Introduction by fellow artist Wilson Hurley, the paintings are presented in five sections. Each section starts with a short piece of text; these build together to tell the life story of the artist and his career and influences. The paintings are supplemented by good supporting text from co-authors Ann and Charlie Cooper, although there nothing about how the artist goes about actually producing a painting.

If you have the first William Phillips book, The Glory of Flight, then you will find a fair amount of overlap in the images, as compensation though there are many of his paintings created in the intervening years including a lot that many readers will not have seen. Overall this is an impressively large and heavy, ‘coffe-table’ volume with top production quality and highly recommended.

Reviewers Pick
Dramatic colours and composition coupled with strong symbolism are typical of the Phillip’s style in Victory Pass, depicting P51 Mustangs of the 343rd FG over a German castle.
